what people are saying about Montgomery Church….. …”Soaring vocals” ……..”Spellbinding Dobro” ……“Stunning harmonies”….
Snowy Mountains based duo, Montgomery Church treat audiences to a spacious, sensitive acoustic representation of original folk and americana music consisting of spellbinding dobro, soaring vocals and stunning harmonies. Comprising of Cielle Montgomery & James Church, they are becoming known for their sparse, tasteful approach which might remind listeners of great folk and americana duos such as Gillian Welch and David Rawlings or a Union Station stripped down to Allison Krauss and Jerry Douglas. The songwriting shows tinges of Patty Griffin, Joey Ryan & Kenneth Pattengale (The Milk Cargon Kids) and Tim O’Brien; but most of all, their combination is at all times enthralling in its dynamic intimacy.
Montgomery Church have toured extensively the past 12 months, playing over 60 gigs including numerous sold out shows and festivals including Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival, Inland Sea of Sound Festival, Hill End Arts Festival, Escape ArtFEST, Tamworth Country Music Festival as well as appearing at Woodford Folk Festival. This year they have already appeared at the National Folk Festival and St Albans Folk Festival, and completed a country halls and house concerts tour of NSW, VIC and the ACT.
In 2016, Cielle was announced as a finalist in the Australian Independent Country Music Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and has just recently been selected for the "Women in String Bands CD Project" through the Australian Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association.
Cielle's 2016 debut release, an all-acoustic, all-Australian EP titled "Walking Free” is right at home in the Folk/Americana/Alt. Country scene and features James' enthralling & unparalleled sound on Dobro. Produced by one of Australia's most respected musicians and producers Glen Hannah, also featuring Jonathan Zwartz on Double Bass, Sue Carson on Fiddle, Felicity Urquhart on Backing Vocals and Glen Hannah himself on acoustic guitar.
These days, Cielle and James spend many months of the year on the road, touring around in their beloved 1986 caravan “Bessie”, with their two black labradors, Wilson and Tilly; whilst writing a bunch of new songs in preparation for their first full length album to be recorded in 2017.
"I was at the Dixie Chicks concert this time last week - and I've got to say, I loved your show even more…!!!!!”…….. Margaret - Mirboo House Concert March 2017
"When listening to the beautiful acoustic sounds and instrumentation, you can’t help but draw comparisons to the great Allison Krauss and Union Station. It’s so exciting to hear a new artist stand up and run their own race"..... Aleyce Simmonds - Award Winning Australian Country Music Artist To see Tour Dates, head to the "Gigs" page here
